The list of active and former OSSTF/FEESO members running in the next Ontario election continues to grow as we approach the June 2, 2022 election day. Former OSSTF/FEESO President Harvey Bischof announced on August 3 that he is seeking the New Democratic Party (NDP) nomination in the riding of Brantford—Brant. The Progressive Conservatives won the riding in 2018 by a margin of less than 700 votes over the NDP in 2018.

The NDP plan on holding its nomination meeting for Brantford—Brant in a few weeks. Bischof joins a number of OSSTF/FEESO members and former members who have already announced their intentions to run in the next provincial election.

NDP MPP Dr. Jill Andrew (District 12, Toronto) will be running again in the riding of Toronto—St. Paul’s.  Michele McCleave-Kennedy (District 2, Algoma) will run again for the NDP in the riding of Sault Ste. Marie. In the 2018 election, McCleave-Kennedy finished second by just over 400 votes to PC MPP Ross Romano. Allison Cillis (District 21, Hamilton-Wentworth) will run for the NDP in the riding of Flamborough—Glanbrook. Other active members and former members are in the process of seeking nominations across the province.

OSSTF/FEESO officially launched its education platform to the public on June 24, entitled Strengthen Public Education – Rebuild Ontario. The Federation calls on the political parties and candidates to adopt our platform as their own for the upcoming election, which focuses on five key areas:

  • Increasing Student-Centred Supports and Services
  • Centring Schools as Part of Our Communities
  • Addressing Systemic Inequities
  • Improving Learning Conditions for All
  • Providing Safe, Healthy Learning and Working Conditions

Members of OSSTF/FEESO are encouraged to let their local District leadership know if they plan on running in the next provincial or municipal elections so they can be recognized for putting their names forward to run for office.

The province needs someone from the education community in the political platform. Someone has to speak for the teachers and students.

  5. This is good news for anyone that cares about Education. Harvey for the win!

  6. Jill and Allison and Michele for the win too!
