Brock University Study: Teachers’ Use of Generative AI in Ontario High Schools

OSSTF/FEESO is pleased to endorse an exciting and timely study conducted by Dr. Sunaina Sharma and Dr. Rahul Kumar with the Brock University Faculty of Education. For their work on artificial intelligence (AI), Dr. Sharma and Dr. Kumar received an OSSTF/FEESO Research Grant on Emerging Issues.

Dr. Sharma and Dr. Kumar are investigating a major area of professional concern for teachers and occasional teachers, namely the presence of generative artificial intelligence (Gen AI) in high school classrooms. Given AI’s current ubiquity and emerging/uncertain pedagogical status, supporting research in this area will enhance public education and help OSSTF/FEESO support and protect our members.

The survey is open to all teacher and occasional teacher members. It asks questions about familiarity with AI, whether teachers and students should be allowed to use AI, and what teachers’ training needs are concerning AI.

We encourage all eligible members to participate.

If you are interested in reading more about Dr. Sharma and Dr. Kumal’s work on AI in classrooms, you can read their article, “Secondary school teachers’ perspectives on GenAI proliferation: generating advanced insights,” here: https://doi.org/10.1007/s40979-025-00180-z.
