Call for focus group members—Joint OSSTF/FEESO & JUMP Math partnership

Logo: JUMP-Math Multiplying Potential

OSSTF/FEESO is partnering with JUMP Math to test a new Grade 9 Math resource. JUMP Math is a charitable organization that is dedicated to “replacing math anxiety with an understanding and love of math in students and teachers.” Currently, the JUMP Math program is available for students in Kindergarten to Grade 8. The program provides student and teacher resources that use “structured inquiry” to teach math. More information on the program, including research results from an efficacy study conducted by Sick Kids, can be found at jumpmath.org.

The Provincial Executive is looking for 10 members interested in being part of a focus group to review and provide feedback on a draft resource produced by JUMP Math for Grade 9 teachers and students. Chosen team members will receive copies of the draft resource for review and testing, and will participate in periodic teleconferences between December 2019 and June 2020.
Applicants must have:

  • a solid understanding of the current grade 9 math curriculum
  • recent experience teaching grade 9 math (within the last three years)
  • an interest in trying a new approach to reducing the achievement gap some students experience in math
  • willingness to provide input and suggestions re: the draft JUMP Math resource

Members must send a completed application, a covering letter, and a letter of recommendation to Cathy Renfrew, Director, Educational Services at cathy.renfrew@osstf.ca.
Deadline for applications is 5:00 p.m. on Friday, November 29, 2019.

Successful applicants as determined by the Provincial Executive will be notified and provided with further details.

For further information, please contact either—Cathy Renfrew or Rob Dubyk at 800-267-7867 or 416-751-8300 or email cathy.renfrew@osstf.ca or rob.dubyk@osstf.ca.

Consider championing the use of JUMP math in classes for students with developmental disability. A well structured program that fits will with many of the students in our Learning and Life Skills Class.
