Accessing Mediation Services Resource Bank
The Mediation Services Resources Bank (MSRB) provides dispute resolution services to members who are in conflict with other members in the workplace.
Members involved in workplace conflicts that may escalate and lead to unprofessional behaviour are vulnerable to employer action, including discipline. By utilizing the mediators from the MSRB, your members can resolve their disputes in a professional and confidential manner, thereby avoiding potential disciplinary actions and returning to healthier, professional working relationships.
The bank consists of OSSTF/FEESO members who have been extensively trained as mediators and come from various job classes, geographic locations, and experiences. The service is confidential and provided in English and French as required. The MSRB will mediate conflicts between members (including members of different job classes) but will not get involved with disputes between members and management. Mediation is inappropriate if any participant feels coerced or the dispute is a matter of a grievance or legal investigation (OSSTF/FEESO Judicial Council (JC), Ontario College of Teachers (OCT), Ontario Labour Relations Board (OLRB), criminal, civil action, or an employer harassment investigation).
When District or Bargaining Unit presidents believe that the MSRB can assist in resolving a dispute between members, they will inform their assigned Educational Services Field Secretary. After completing the “Request for Mediation Form” and submitting it to Ellen Hinan (ellen.hinan@osstf.ca), the chair of the MSRB will contact the local leader to discuss the situation and assess if the situation is appropriate for mediation. The local leader will need to ensure that the disputants enter the process voluntarily and that they enter mediation with the intent of resolving the issue. Mediations will take place at a mutually agreeable time and place, and all proceedings are strictly confidential, ensuring the privacy and security of all involved.
If you require further information about the Mediation Services Resource Bank or the formal request process, contact Ellen.Hinan@osstf.ca.
